Why is windows not updating
If Windows Update has been throwing out error messages, then cross-check the error code contained within against that list – this will likely helpt you to discover the reasons the updates are failing in the first place.Users of 2-in-1 PCs built around 2012 through to 2014 may also find themselves running into issues with Windows 10 installations thanks to Windows Update breaking. From System Restore you can pick an appropriate point to revert to., involves a little more interaction with your computer’s system settings. It shouldn’t cause any damage to your PC – you’ll only really be deleting temporary Windows Update files – but we’d recommend setting up a System Restore point before going any further.Sometimes, updates can be large and require a long time to download. If a particular update is stuck at, say, 75% for an hour or two – don’t panic.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, SP1 from an original windows disk.
I activated windows successfully and started windows update.
The symptom: went attempting to run windows update it says "searching for updates". Did the "clear the cache" fix, (stopped BITS and windows update services, deleted Software Distribution folder, then restarted), no change 2.
It never stops "searching for updates" until I close or end the program. Attempted to install updates manually, it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer". Even when trying to install the system update readiness tool does not work. Thank you I decided to start over, even installed a new, factory fresh hard drive (I have planned to do this in the future and thought this would be a good time to do it).
